Naut’sa mawt Tribal Council’s comprehensive community planning (CCP) networking team will have emergency preparedness on the agenda for its Feb. 25 meeting in Nanaimo.“Emergency planning is an aspect of CCP that has been the subject of considerable interest in our recent meetings,” said Gary Reith, the team’s coordinator. “Sometimes preparedness is just pushed to the side, or even forgotten about, as a community plans its future.
“So, after talking to many team members, we thought devoting an entire meeting to the subject was a good idea,” Reith said. “I think this session will prove to be useful and engaging.”
Among the speakers will be Richard George of INAC who will give an overview on emergency preparedness planning.
Next on the agenda will be a how-to session hosted by Elizabeth Thomson from the First Nations Emergency Services Society. She will discuss resources and techniques to develop an emergency preparedness plan and will take team members through the process of preparing a plan.
John Bolton, Naut’sa mawt Tribal Council’s engineer will talk about the practical considerations in emergency planning.
Also on the meeting’s agenda are the community reports that are usually one of the highlights of the team’s meetings. “It’s great when we have people from each community,” said Reith. “It fosters a lively exchange of questions, answers and ideas.”
This will be the tenth quarterly networking team meeting. It will take place in the Oxford Room of the Dorchester Hotel at 70 Church St. in downtown Nanaimo. The session starts at 8:30 a.m.
