"Job-Ready" Program at Tillicum

Good job prospects await graduates from a substance abuse counselor training program in Nanaimo.

"Students who graduate from this program have a high rate of success at finding work," said Gord Lock of Tillicum Haus Friendship Centre. "Sometimes students carry on with their post-secondary education."

Applications are now being taken for the next ten-month certificate program which starts in September. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in substance abuse, recovery work in the entry-level course.

"One of the unique aspects of this training is that it is highly experiential and has a credit transfer agreement with Malaspina University-College," said Lock. "The experiential part of the program helps people be work ready after graduation."

Credits can be applied to Malaspina's child and youth care or the social services programs.

"We interview prospective students all year round," said Lock. "We like to encourage interested people to apply as soon as possible because band funding can be difficult to obtain near the fiscal year end. We qualify for band funding because of the credit transfer agreement."
