Halalt Teaches Children on its River

Halalt Teaches Children on its River

More than 60 children from Nutsuma’at Lelum Child Care Centre at Chemainus First Nation were introduced to the salmon journey when they visited the Chemainus River last fall.

Chief James Thomas said Halalt First Nation liked to have children see brood stock collection and other activities on the river.

“It is good they can watch what we are doing and learn about what all is involved in the migration process of the salmon journey back to their native streams… their last journey.”

The fisheries crew helping out on the day was from several Nations. They included: Chemainus: John Elliott, Roger Elliott and Kevin Frenchy; Penelakut: Bruce Thomas; Lyackson Joe Seward; Halalt: Bert Thomas and Ben Norris; and fisheries biologist Dave Clough.
