Several Naut’sa mawt Tribal Council member nations will be holding elections this spring.
First to go to the polls will be members of Tsleil-Waututh Nation. They will be voting for chief and four councillors at the end of March.
Klahoose will be next to vote for chief and two council members on April 4.
Chemainus First Nation voters will be going to the polls later that month to elect a chief and 11 councillors.
Also, that month, Halalt First Nation voters will be selecting their chief and two council members.
Klahoose, like the other nations voting this spring, conducts elections under Indian Band Election Regulations. It announced to members that there will be one significant change this year in that candidates for councilor positions do not need to reside on the reserve.
That change was a result of a recent court decision that ruled that subsection 75(1) of the Indian Act violated section 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
